“SEI helps you to realize your full potential…”

Charles McKinney’s smile makes you feel like an old friend. Everyone who knows him will tell you that people don’t get much better than Charles.

Charles reminisces, “There wasn’t a bigger draw in the inner-city than Self Enhancement’s camp. It wasn’t just the free shoes and the competition that drew me, it was the instruction in the game of life.”

For Charles, the eldest of two sons being raised primarily by their mother, the instruction he received and the years he worked as a coach in SEI’s summer programs set his life’s course. “As a young man, the inspiration I received from (SEI leaders) Tony and Ray motivated me to finish high school and create a plan beyond basketball. I learned the value of a good education, and I learned not to take it for granted.”

Charles helped win the state basketball championship for Wilson High School in 1989. He continued to Oregon State University, earning a full scholarship and graduating with a degree in communication.

After many years as a Coordinator and coach at SEI, Charles continues to affect the lives of students. He currently works as the Jefferson High School College Center Coordinator, helping students prepare for success in college.

Charles believes SEI is the best program around for young people. “SEI helps you to realize your full potential, and in doing so you can help others reach their full potential.”
