SEI has teachers and tutors on staff to assist students
who need extra academic help after school, on the weekends,
and during the summer. Students can also take advantage
of the academic enrichment materials offered in SEI’s
library and computer lab.
In-School Program
Coordinators (full-time SEI staff) provide daily case
management of and advocacy for SEI participants within
their schools and within the community, tracking scholastic
achievement, attendance, and behavior of the students.
SEI Coordinators build one-on-one relationships with
students and develop Individual Success Plans for each
student.
After School Program
SEI offers after school programming at the Center for
Self Enhancement Monday through Friday and on Saturdays.
The after school program is structured into periods
which include homework tutorials, enrichment classes,
performing arts and computer electives, and recreation.
Students are assigned to classes by their coordinator
and parents. If a student is not performing at benchmark
level in reading or math, he/she attends a mandatory
tutorial session.
Students can earn Incentive Points for good behavior,
consistent attendance, and academic achievement in SEI’s
programs. Incentive awards include t-shirts, gift certificates,
field trips, and special dinners out.
Summer Program
Every July and August SEI offers a six-week Summer
Program which serves over 700 elementary, middle, and
high school students.
The summer program includes:
• Academic classes taught by Portland Public School
teachers
• The opportunity to attend music camp at Portland
State University
• Visits to museums, dramatic performances and
art exhibits
• Summer internships and jobs for SEI high school
students
All of SEI’s summer programming is led by knowledgeable
staff who have already worked with students during the
school year and who are aware of what support the students
need to be successful in the coming school year.
SEI staff know that by creating a comprehensive and
engaging summer program they’re serving the students,
helping out parents and keeping kids off of the street
– a real service to the community.
