SEI grew out of a partnership with Portland Public
Schools and the Albina Ministerial Alliance in 1981.
Since that time, SEI has grown into a full service community
agency which serves over 2000 youth and families each
year. In order to offer its comprehensive array of services,
SEI has partnered with several government, private,
and public organizations.
Below are a few we’d like to highlight:
Portland
Public Schools
SEI has partnered with Portland Public Schools since
the program began as a one-week basketball camp at Fern
Hill Park in 1981. Currently, SEI partners with eleven
schools in the district to provide its youth development
and violence prevention programs. Full-time SEI staff
work in the schools to provide case management services
to the youth who are enrolled in SEI’s programs.
SEI staff and school staff are in regular communication
regarding a student’s attendance, behavior, and
academic performance. The partnership between the schools
and SEI creates a comprehensive support structure for
high-risk youth.
Camp
Caldera
About a decade ago, SEI began a partnership with
Caldera, a local arts-based nonprofit that teaches kids
ages 11-17 how to express themselves creatively and
exposes them to the marvels of the outdoors. Caldera’s
programs offer something truly unique to young people
at SEI. Over the years, more than 200 SEI students have
gone to Camp Caldera’s site in the mountains of
Central Oregon to take 7- to 10-day workshops that focus
on photography, African dance and drumming, and creative
writing.
