AN SEI STUDENT’S STORY OF SUCCESS

Shy and self-conscious, Rosalyn, a Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) student since the 6th grade, modeled good behavior in school but struggled academically in math and science. Her difficulties in these subjects continued into high school, affecting her progress toward graduation -- until  she partnered with an SEI coordinator to create an Individual Success Plan (ISP).

At SEI, we believe that every child has a gift and that all children can and will succeed. An n ISP is the tool that helps our in-school service coordinators cultivate strategic one-on-one relationships to help students achieve their personal, social, academic, and career goals.

In Rosalyn’s case, her coordinator journeyed with her through high school, encouraging and empowering her every single step of the way. With SEI’s help, Rosalyn applied for and received a University of Oregon scholarship, granting her the opportunity to acquire a post-secondary education with no financial burden! Although fearful of an  unknown and uncertain future, Rosalyn believed in her ability to succeed because of her coordinator and her family here at SEI. The wider community connections fostered by SEI also provided constant reminders that she could and would succeed.

Today, we are excited to share that Rosalyn will be graduating from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology! She plans on continuing her education toward the goal of one day opening her own counseling office to serve inner-city youth and families who have not yet worked through generational trauma. Reflecting the 40-year mission and work of SEI, Rosalyn’s heart is set on continuing the cycle of healing and transformation for those in her community who are struggling, uncertain, and underserved.
