Remembering Dan Wieden

We lost a one-of-a-kind leader, visionary and friend in the passing of Dan Wieden. Like most of us I had heard the legend of Dan Wieden and the success of Wieden+Kennedy long before I met him.

The marketing and advertising genius is well documented. What isn't documented is that this giant-of-a human being and corporate success story have another side to him. The side that wanted to change the world by impacting the lives of children through art and self-expression. Dan, along with his daughter Cassie started Camp Caldera the most beautiful, welcoming and peaceful youth campsite that one could imagine. Self Enhancement, Inc. provided the first students for this new experiment. Putting Black students from inner Northeast Portland in the woods of Central Oregon was risky to say the least. This was a risk worth taking to help build an opportunity for thousands of future campers to experience something new, something different, and something life changing.

Dan was the backbone of Caldera. Never have I met a person so powerful, yet so humble, so giving and so vulnerable to all who care to step into his presence. I am lucky enough to have shared a friendship with Dan, one that has greatly impacted my life. His spirit was infectious, his smile provided the light and security during the darkest nights of Caldera. His heart, big enough to inspire family, friends, staff and the many students who now know who they are because Dan provided a safe environment to explore self.

Perhaps most individuals will remember Dan for that great line he created for Nike, “Just Do It” I will remember him most for this one simple fact “He Did It!”

We Love you Dan.
